The English Empire reigns over four-fifths of the globe. For more than a thousand years, since the days of Alfred the Great, the Empire has been ruled by Alfred’s heirs in an unbroken dynasty.
There are new forces moving in the Empire. King Edgar, the Vessel of the Holy Blood, has made enemies. Can Raif Walker, a teenager from a tiny, unimportant Dominion, uncover the mystery which lurks at the heart of this ancient monarchy? With the help of his new friend Jess, can he penetrate the ancient Tower, the fortress which has stood for a millennium? Can he survive in London, the most powerful City the world has ever known?
The Blood is an exciting fantasy set in a modern world very like our own ruled by merciless tyrants, controlled by an all-powerful media, where stumbling on ancient secrets could mean certain death…

The Blood English Empire Book 1 eBook Sam Carter

I enjoyed this book. Whilst not earth shattering, it was clever and it required some serious lateral thinking before writing to get the plot scenario right and then it required equally serious concentration during writing to keep it right. Both were done admirably well and I particularly enjoyed the constant use of ‘blasphemy’ without it becoming offensive simply because of the use ordinary every day words.
The story line worked but be aware that this is a children's book. However the child in me had a lot of fun reading it. I liked the abrasive interaction between the main characters, Raif and Jess, a lot of calling each other ‘idiot’ and ‘stupid.’ This can work well between children as it is how they behave but, if Raif and Jess were adults, it would have grated a little.
Although at times it required a lot of luck both Raif and Jess managed to survive through all sorts of exciting scrapes, the secret of writing is to make the reader believe that, however far fetched, this could have happened. The author was skillful enough to do this in almost every case.
We are left with one or two unanswered questions at the end but the author has provided the reader with a possible future answer to these by stating “END OF BOOK ONE.”

The Blood English Empire Book 1 eBook Sam Carter Reviews

So remember when you were a teen (tween) and you read books voraciously because they had great stories set in worlds that were believable? Characters that you thought, 'yeah that could be me'? So this is what I felt like at the ripe old age of 40+. I felt like a teenager again. Read it on kindle paper-light like I used to with a torch light after 'lights out'; reading way later than I should have and looking forward to the next chapter all through the day. Really just had a great time reading it. If I had teen children I'd be passing it on and enjoying the fun of sharing in the adventure. Bring on book 2!
